Kathryn Carter

I am an artist and registered architect born in Auckland. I attended the University of Auckland Architecture School during the mid eighties and graduated in 1987. During architectural studies I was tutored by Pat Hanly and Claudia Pond Eyley from Elam School of Fine Arts and Kerry Morrow for drawing classes studying form, volume, light and perspective. Their influence on my art practice has been life long. I gained registration as an architect in 1992 and since that time I have continued to work, draw and paint whilst bringing up my family. I am a founding member of Railway St studios in Newmarket Auckland.

I describe myself as an expressionist landscape painter. The Northland landscape intrigues me with its constantly changing light and atmosphere affected by the sea, sun, wind and rain. I attempt to capture something of the atmosphere in my work – its junction with the sea and it’s connection to the land through the seasons. I like to paint in acrylics on paper, canvas and panel, and oils on canvas and panel. I am inspired by the experience of the human condition in relation to the landscape by New Zealand poets and writers Brasch, Tuwhare, Curnow, Frame, Baxter and Fairburn. Painters such as McCahon, Hotere, Hanly and Albrecht inspire me for their use of colour and passion for New Zealand’s unique landscapes. As a writer and painter in both Northland and Auckland, I am a philanthropic thinker from Austrian Jewish and Anglo Scottish heritage.
